2003

Earned Bachelor's of Computer Science degree and inducted into Computer Science Honor Society (ETSU).

2007-2013

Worked as USPTO Patent Examiner in a data processing art unit and earned an Intellectual Property Law LL.M. from The George Washington University Law School.

2014-2020

Worked as a Patent Prosecution Associate at two of the Top 10 Patent Law Firms (per Harrity Analytics annual rankings): Oliff PLC and Sughrue Mion PLLC.

2020-2021

John focuses on securing high-quality patent protection for software, computer, and digital technologies including innovations related to artificial intelligence, machine learning, augmented reality, virtual reality, cloud computing, Internet of Things (IoT), authentication, database management, object detection, activity-tracking, signal processing, vehicle motor control, navigational interfaces, medical devices, blockchain, electronic gaming, and targeted advertising, among others. In addition to patent preparation and prosecution, John also provides clients with patent portfolio counseling.

He has more than 14 years of combined law firm and United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) experience in software and electro-mechanical patent preparation and prosecution. As a USPTO Patent Examiner for over six years, John examined and granted hundreds of software patent applications covering a variety of technologies related to location-based services, natural language processing (NLP), biometrics, context-based search, legacy integration/conversion, data audits, back-up recovery, Structured Query Language (SQL), network transmission protocols, image processing, heuristic and semantic analysis, de-duplication, data migration, and database queries.

Before joining Michael Best, John was an associate at a Washington, D.C. IP boutique in the firm’s Internet, Software, and Electrical-Mechanical practice. Prior to joining private practice and while working at the USPTO, John also served as a Judicial Intern for the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC). Earlier in his career, John gained valuable industry experience working in systems administration.

Honors & Recognition

During law school John received the CALI Award for highest grade in Patent Law. As an undergraduate he was initiated into Upsilon Pi Epsilon, the International Honor Society for Computing and Information Disciplines.
